1. Walmart To Launch Clinical Research Sites In Shuttered Health Clinics
Walmart plans to convert a select number of its retail locations and recently closed outpatient health clinics into clinical research sites this spring. The pilot program will initially encompass ten store-based locations across three states and five former hospital-affiliated outpatient centers, leveraging existing real estate to host Phase II and III studies in areas such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and respiratory conditions. By partnering with major pharmaceutical sponsors and contract research organizations, Walmart aims to enroll up to 6,000 participants over the first 12 months, tapping into its in-store patient base to accelerate trial recruitment. Investors will note that this initiative broadens Walmart’s healthcare strategy beyond pharmacy services, potentially unlocking a new revenue stream estimated to contribute $50 million in annual service fees by 2027 and strengthening the company’s position in the burgeoning clinical trials market.
