Waymo Robotaxi Stalls in Police Standoff After Recall of 2,000 Vehicles
A Waymo robotaxi carrying a passenger drove into an active Atlanta police standoff, bypassing officers and halting in the middle of a crime scene. This marks the second such incident in months and follows a December recall of 2,000 vehicles after repeated school bus stop sign violations and safety probes.
1. Atlanta Police Standoff Incident
On February 17, a Waymo robotaxi carrying a passenger entered an active standoff in Atlanta, bypassing multiple marked police vehicles and stopping in the center of a crime scene. A responding officer manually disengaged the vehicle under protocol before roadside assistance retrieved it.
2. Los Angeles Intersection Incident
In December, another Waymo taxi navigated through a cordoned intersection in Los Angeles where officers were engaged with an armed suspect, placing the vehicle directly in the line of fire. The incident was captured on video, highlighting gaps in Waymo’s detection of local enforcement zones.
3. School Bus Safety Violations and Recall
Last month, Waymo disclosed that its autonomous fleet failed to stop for deployed school bus stop signs in Austin an average of 1.5 times weekly, prompting 20 citations during the school year. The company initiated a voluntary recall of 2,000 vehicles in early December after implementing a software update to address the issue.
4. Regulatory Probes and Company Valuation
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened two preliminary evaluations into Waymo’s automated driving systems following these incidents. Despite raising $16 billion at a $126 billion valuation in a recent funding round, Waymo faces growing scrutiny over safety data completeness and public trust.
