Weak quarter for Intel sends shivers through cooling chip stocks
SOXX•Intel’s weak quarterly results and PC-industry outlook sent its shares down 18% after hours and weighed on chip stocks, including AMD, down 4%, and Broadcom, down 2%. Intel said an Israel factory shutdown would cost roughly $600 million in lost revenue over two quarters.
1. Chip stocks fall after hours
Intel shares fell 18% in after-hours trading after the company reported weak quarterly results and cited near-term headwinds across the PC industry. The semiconductor index also sold off, following a 1.4% drop in the regular session the day before.
2. Factory shutdown adds costs
Intel said an explosion at its factory in Israel, which was shut down for about two weeks, would cost roughly $600 million in lost revenue over two quarters. AMD fell 4% and Broadcom dropped 2% in post-market trading.
3. Sector momentum under pressure
The semiconductor index had risen more than 60% in 2026, driven by shortages of chips and equipment for AI development, but was down 13% from its recent October high and 21% from its June all-time high. One investor said Intel’s PC-related problems might not have much effect on the broader market.
