Western Midstream Starts 1,000 BPD Reclaimed Water Pilot in Permian Basin
WES•Western Midstream’s JIP 2 facility in Reeves County, Texas, processes 2,000 bbl/d of produced water into 1,000 bbl/d of reclaimed freshwater. Output is ten times JIP 1’s volume and will inform the rollout of first commercial-scale desalination facilities.
1. Pilot Facility Start-Up
Western Midstream has commissioned the JIP 2 produced-water treatment pilot facility near Red Bluff Reservoir in Reeves County, Texas, capable of processing 2,000 barrels per day of produced water into 1,000 barrels per day of reclaimed freshwater.
2. Performance versus JIP 1
The new plant delivers ten times the freshwater output achieved by the initial JIP 1 pilot and builds on over 50,000 collected water-quality data points to validate treatment technologies across industrial cooling, irrigation, and discharge applications.
3. Commercial-Scale Outlook
Data and operational insights from JIP 2 will guide the design and deployment of Western Midstream’s first commercial-scale desalination facilities, aiming to reduce disposal volumes and secure long-term water supply for industry and local communities.
