Western Star Retires 57X Tractor, Seeks Over 35% Vocational Share by 2030
Daimler Truck North America will retire Western Star’s on-highway 57X tractor in 2025 to prioritize its X Series vocational trucks after the 47X and 49X exceeded sales expectations. The unit aims to boost its U.S. heavy-duty vocational market share from 24% to over 35% by 2030.
1. Retirement Shifts Product Focus
Western Star will retire the 57X in 2025, ending production of its on-highway tractor model to focus on heavy-duty vocational trucks. Dealers were quietly notified of the phase-out as Daimler Truck North America shifts manufacturing at its Cleveland plant toward vocational models.
2. X Series Outperforms Expectations
The X Series lineup, including the 47X and 49X, has exceeded internal sales expectations, becoming the core of Western Star’s vocational strategy. Four cab configurations originally offered on the 57X are now concentrated in the better-performing X Series, which anchors the brand’s vocational growth.
3. Aggressive Market Share and Margin Goals
Daimler Truck aims to raise its U.S. heavy-duty vocational market share from 24% to over 35% by 2030 and boost sales by 60%. The unit also targets a North American margin of up to 14% by 2030, building on a 2024 return on sales of 12.9% and a Class 8 share increase to 5.5% in 2025.
