Westport Debuts 700-Bar CNG Storage with HPDI on 500 hp Volvo VNL 300
Westport is demonstrating its next-generation ~700 bar CNG storage system integrated with Cespira’s HPDI on a Volvo VNL 300 truck delivering 500 hp and 1,850 lb-ft torque at ACT Expo 2026. The system achieves diesel-like efficiency—up to 10 mpg equivalent and 600-mile range—while enabling lower emissions.
1. North American Demonstration at ACT Expo
Westport is showcasing its next-generation compressed natural gas fuel storage system integrated with Cespira’s HPDI fuel injectors on a Volvo VNL 300 heavy-duty truck at ACT Expo 2026 in Las Vegas. This marks the first real-world North American demonstration of the combined system, highlighting its readiness for commercial trials.
2. High-Pressure CNG and HPDI Integration
The high-pressure (~700 bar) CNG platform features an integrated smart tank system, advanced control software, and HPDI injectors that enable diesel-cycle combustion without the need for onboard compressors, engine modifications, or changes to maintenance schedules. This architecture maximizes usable fuel mass and supports natural gas-hydrogen blends.
3. Performance and Efficiency Benefits
The demonstration truck’s 500 horsepower engine and 1,850 lb-ft torque deliver diesel-like performance, achieving up to 10 mpg equivalent and a driving range exceeding 600 miles. Fleets can maintain standard maintenance intervals while reducing emissions and operating costs compared to conventional diesel trucks.
4. Pathway to Hydrogen Adoption
Cespira’s HPDI fuel system can run on natural gas, renewable natural gas, hydrogen, or blends with minimal hardware changes. This adaptability provides OEMs a practical transition strategy to hydrogen, avoiding the need for 99.999% purity, cryogenic trailers, or dedicated distribution networks.
