Westport JV Cespira Finalizes HPDI Hydrogen Fuel System for Volvo’s 13L Engine ahead of 2030 Launch
WPRT•Cespira, Westport’s JV with Volvo Group, signed a deal to finalize integration of its HPDI hydrogen fuel system into Volvo’s 13-litre heavy-duty engine, targeting European launch before 2030. The system promises diesel-equivalent performance on zero-carbon hydrogen and tolerates variable fuel compositions, boosting fleet decarbonization.
1. Agreement Details
Cespira and Volvo Group have signed a development agreement to finalize integration and commercialization of Cespira’s HPDI hydrogen fuel system technology for Volvo’s 13-litre heavy-duty engine platform. This deal covers the final development phases building on proven HPDI performance in LNG applications.
2. Technology Advantages
The HPDI system enables direct injection of hydrogen at high pressures, delivering diesel-equivalent performance with zero-carbon fuel and tolerating a range of hydrogen purities. This offers an efficiency and performance edge over fuel-cell systems in demanding heavy-duty load cycles.
3. Commercial Timeline
On-road testing of hydrogen-powered Volvo trucks is already underway, with European certification and commercial launch targeted before 2030. The partnership positions fleets to reduce CO₂ emissions cost-effectively while leveraging a common engine platform and supports Westport’s long-term growth through the JV.
