‘Whalefall’ film dives deep into father-son bonds within a whale tale
DIS•Disney's 20th Century Studios survival film “Whalefall” follows a young man trapped inside a sperm whale as he searches for his father's remains and draws on lessons from their complicated relationship.
1. A fight to survive
“Whalefall,” arriving in theaters on Friday, follows Jay Gardiner, played by Austin Abrams, who is swallowed by a sperm whale while diving off California's Central Coast to search for his father's remains. With one hour of oxygen left, Jay relies on lessons his father taught him about the ocean and diving.
2. A father-son bond
Josh Brolin plays Jay's father, Mitt Gardiner. The film uses flashbacks to explore their turbulent relationship and Mitt's drive to share his ocean obsession with his son. Director Brian Duffield co-wrote the screenplay with Daniel Kraus, whose novel inspired the film.
