What to Watch in the Week Ahead and on Monday, September 14

Bank of America Chief Executive Officer Brian Moynihan and Citi Chief Financial Officer Gonzalo Luchetti are expected to speak at the Barclays Global Financial Services Conference. From the Canadian economic monitor, Statistics Canada is expected to release the country's August inflation figures and July manufacturing sales data. The region's annual inflation rate accelerated to 3% in July and on a monthly basis, the consumer price index rose by 0.5%. In Canada, Statistics Canada is scheduled to report producer prices data for the month of August on Thursday. On Wednesday, housing starts data for August is scheduled for release by the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Additionally, building permits figures for July are also due on the same day. Meanwhile, wholesale trade data for the month of July is due on Tuesday. On the Latin American economic calendar, Brazil's central bank rate-setting committee is scheduled to announce its interest rate decision on Wednesday. Additionally, Brazil's July retail sales figures and July IBC-Br economic activity index are due on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. On Friday, Argentina's statistics agency, INDEC, is expected to publish the country's GDP figures for the second quarter. The Federal Reserve Open Markets Committee is set to begin its two-day monetary policy meeting on Tuesday and is expected to announce interest rate decision on Wednesday, accompanied by the release of a closely watched policy statement. Additionally, the Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh is set to hold a news conference at the end of the policy meeting. On the U.S. economic tap, the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics is expected to report that import prices likely rose 0.3% in August on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Census Bureau is expected to report that retail sales likely rose 0.9% in August, after recording a 0.6% decrease in July. The same department, on Thursday, is expected to report that housing starts likely rose to 1.318 million units in August, while building permits are expected to have increased to 1.410 million units in the same period. On the same day, the Labor Department is expected to release the weekly jobless claims report. Initial claims for unemployment benefits likely remained unchanged at 206,000 for the week ended September 12. Continued jobless claims for the week ended September 5 are also expected. Additionally, on Friday, Federal Reserve data is projected to show that industrial production rose 0.3% in August, after rising 0.2% in the prior month. Capacity utilization is expected to come in at 76.4% in August. Executives from major U.S. banks are set to speak at the Barclays Annual Global Financial Services Conference, including Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon on Wednesday and Wells Fargo CFO Mike Santomassimo, Morgan Stanley Co-President Dan Simkowitz, and JPMorgan Co-President Doug Petno on Tuesday. Boeing's President and CEO Kelly Ortberg is expected to speak at the Morgan Stanley Laguna Conference on Wednesday. Canada's Dollarama is expected to post a rise in second-quarter revenue on Wednesday, as inflation-weary consumers turn to the discount retailer for lower-priced essentials. Investors will look for comments on the impact of rising costs, changing consumer spending trends and the U.S.-Canada trade spat as well as annual forecasts.
