Whirlpool Commits $300M to Ohio Plants, Plans 600 Jobs and SDA Growth

On October 15, 2025 Whirlpool announced a $300 million investment in its Clyde and Marion, Ohio plants to add up to 600 jobs and strengthen U.S. laundry manufacturing. The company is accelerating product refreshes, gaining North America market share and expanding its SDA segment to offset slowing housing demand.

1. Whirlpool’s U.S. Manufacturing Commitment Earns Local Praise

In a joint op-ed published January 15 in The Plain Dealer, the mayors of Clyde and Marion, Ohio, lauded Whirlpool’s dedication to domestic production. The company employs roughly 4,500 workers across both sites, which together form its U.S. laundry manufacturing operations. The Clyde plant, in continuous operation since 1952, holds the distinction of being the world’s largest washing machine facility, while the Marion complex recently celebrated its 70th anniversary. Last October, Whirlpool announced a $300 million capital investment in these two factories, a project projected to generate up to 600 new jobs. Local officials highlighted that sustained, community-focused partnerships have fostered skilled labor, reliable output and long-term economic stability in the region.

2. Strategic Measures to Counter Slowing U.S. Housing Demand

Facing a downturn in U.S. housing starts, Whirlpool has accelerated its product refresh cycle, introducing over a dozen new kitchen and laundry appliance models in the past six months. This initiative has driven share gains in North America, where the company reported a two-point increase in market penetration for built-in refrigeration and smart laundry segments during the latest quarter. In parallel, Whirlpool’s small domestic appliance (SDA) business expanded revenue by 8% year-over-year, supported by increased distribution partnerships and targeted promotions. Management maintains that these measures, combined with ongoing production flexibility and a strong balance sheet, position the company to capitalize on a housing market recovery whenever it materializes.
