Woodside Awards A$419.4M Tugboat Contract for Four Hybrid Vessels
Woodside Energy awarded a A$419.4m contract to Green Tug Towing for the design and construction of four hybrid diesel-electric tugboats to support its Louisiana LNG project under a 20-year agreement, bringing base development spending with local suppliers to over US$1 billion. The vessels are due for delivery in 2028.
1. Contract Award and Scope
Woodside Energy has granted a A$419.4m contract to Green Tug Towing, a joint venture between Harbor Docking & Towing and Saltchuk Marine, for the design and construction of four Robert Allan RApport 2800H hybrid diesel-electric tugboats. These vessels will support LNG tankers at the Louisiana facility under a 20-year service arrangement.
2. Project Financing and Spending
The award increases Woodside’s cumulative spending with Louisiana suppliers for the base development of its Louisiana LNG project to over US$1 billion. The project, sanctioned nearly a year ago at a final investment decision stage, targets an initial capacity of 16.5 mtpa across three trains with full permitting for expansion to 27.6 mtpa.
3. Vessel Specifications and Local Employment
The escort tugs feature advanced hybrid propulsion for reduced emissions, high bollard pull for large LNG carriers, and optimized hull and fendering for terminal operations. Construction at C&C Marine and Repair begins in Q2 2026, creating about 70 direct jobs, 30 related roles and 60 temporary positions during build-out.
