TM•Ford dethroned Toyota in J.D. Power’s 2026 initial quality ranking for the first time since 2010. Toyota could gain roughly ¥550 billion in operating profit from the yen sliding from ¥150 to ¥161 per dollar, possibly lifting its 3 trillion yen forecast.
Ford captured the top spot in J.D. Power’s 2026 initial quality survey, ending Toyota’s 16-year reign. Toyota’s domestic plants, which produce 85% of its U.S. volume, underperformed as Ford credited a company-wide quality culture shift for the improvement.
The yen’s fall from ¥150 to around ¥161 per dollar could boost Toyota’s operating profit by roughly ¥550 billion, since each one-yen depreciation adds about ¥50 billion. This currency windfall, coupled with lower energy and material costs, may prompt a revision above its current ¥3 trillion forecast.
