AECOM-Led JV to Build NYC’s 3.25-Mile CSO Tunnel with 50-Million-Gallon Capacity

It will include a dewatering pump station, connect to the wastewater plant and deliver 50 million gallons of storage capacity.

Newtown Creek CSO Partners, a joint venture of AECOM, Parsons Corporation and EPC Consultants Inc., was awarded by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection to provide construction supervision services for the city’s first combined sewer overflow (CSO) storage tunnel and pump station project.
2. Tunnel Specifications and Capacity
Under the contract, the team will oversee the delivery of 3.25 miles of underground storage and conveyance tunnels, a dewatering pump station and connections to the Newtown Creek Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility, aiming for seamless integration with existing infrastructure.
3. Environmental Impact
Once operational, the system is expected to offer up to 50 million gallons of storage capacity, significantly reducing combined sewer discharges into the federally-designated Newtown Creek Superfund site and enhancing urban waterway resilience.
