AeroVironment Inc. today announced the launch of Mission Specialist Wraith, the latest entrant in its Mission Specialist Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) lineup developed by wholly owned subsidiary VideoRay. Revealed at the Navy League’s annual meeting in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, Wraith weighs under 60 pounds, measures 1.2 meters in length and 0.3 meters in diameter, and is rated for sustained operations down to 300 meters. Its dual high-efficiency brushless thrusters deliver a top speed of 4 knots, while a modular payload bay can accommodate up to 7 kilograms of sensors, including multi-beam sonar and high-definition cameras. Equipped with integrated inertial navigation and an open-architecture control system, Wraith supports rapid mission reconfiguration in under 20 minutes, marking a 25% reduction in deployment time compared to its predecessor. VideoRay engineers report that initial sea trials demonstrated station-keeping precision within 0.5 meters and endurance exceeding eight hours on a single battery charge, reinforcing AVAV’s commitment to expeditionary-ready platforms for defense and commercial subsea missions.
