After winning two jet fighter contracts, Boeing could be turning the page
BA•Boeing won the Navy’s F/A-XX fighter contract, worth more than $20 billion in initial development, after securing the Air Force’s F-47 program last year. Production of both aircraft could generate hundreds of billions of dollars over their lifetimes.
1. Two major fighter wins
Boeing’s F/A-XX award followed its win of the Air Force’s F-47 program last year. People familiar with the competitions cited Boeing’s carrier-based fighter experience, investment and design approach as factors in the Navy decision.
2. Contract risks remain
The awards do not guarantee financial success: Boeing has lost $20.5 billion on five fixed-price development programs, and analysts said results will depend heavily on contract terms. CEO Kelly Ortberg has said Boeing will not pursue similar fixed-price development contracts in the future.
3. Aircraft timelines
The F-47 is expected to fly in 2028 and enter service in 2029, with the Air Force planning to buy at least 185 aircraft to replace the F-22. The F/A-XX is expected to enter service in the 2030s and eventually replace the Navy’s F/A-18 fleet.
