Alaska Airlines Breaks Ground on $135M 125,000-Square-Foot Maintenance Hangar
ALK•Alaska Airlines has broken ground on a 125,000-square-foot maintenance hangar at Portland International Airport backed by a $135 million investment and set to create over 100 skilled jobs. The facility will service up to two widebody or three narrowbody aircraft simultaneously, improving fleet turnaround and network efficiency.
1. Groundbreaking of New Portland Maintenance Hangar
Alaska Airlines commenced construction of a 125,000-square-foot maintenance hangar at Portland International Airport on June 16, 2026, adjacent to its existing Horizon Air operations center. The ceremony marks the start of a project slated for completion in the second quarter of 2028.
2. $135 Million Investment and Capacity Expansion
The $135 million facility will include 60,000 square feet of office space, engine, machine and sheet metal shops, and support areas. It will allow technicians to work on up to three narrowbody or two widebody aircraft at once, significantly expanding service capacity in the region.
3. Enhanced Fleet Turnaround and Network Efficiency
By enabling faster recovery of out-of-service aircraft and reducing reliance on Seattle and other hubs, the new hangar is designed to shorten maintenance turn times. This operational flexibility supports growth across Alaska Airlines’ West Coast network.
4. Local Economic Impact and Job Creation
The project is expected to create more than 100 highly skilled roles for maintenance technicians, engineers and service professionals in the Portland area. It underscores Alaska Airlines’ ongoing investment in its largest carrier hub in the city, which will see 50% more seats this fall compared to two years ago.
