Algoma Steel Starts EAF Production, Targets 70% Emissions Reduction
ASTL•Algoma Steel commissioned its first electric arc furnace in July 2025 and began decommissioning Blast Furnace No.7 and cokemaking assets in January 2026. The transition to full EAF steelmaking, with a second furnace due in 2026, aims to cut carbon emissions intensity by roughly 70%.
1. Report Highlights EAF Commissioning
In its 2025 Sustainability Report, Algoma Steel detailed the July 2025 commissioning of its first electric arc furnace (EAF), marking the company’s shift from blast furnace operations to EAF-based steel production. This milestone initiated Volta™ steel output under a calendar-year reporting period.
2. Decommissioning and Decarbonization Efforts
In January 2026, Algoma ceased operations at Blast Furnace No.7 and began decommissioning its cokemaking assets, progressing the largest industrial decarbonization project in North America. The complete transition to EAF steelmaking is projected to lower carbon emissions intensity by approximately 70%.
3. Future Expansion and Market Positioning
Construction of a second EAF unit remains on schedule for 2026 launch, supporting a targeted increase in annual raw steel capacity. By coupling EAF technology with Ontario’s clean electricity grid, Algoma aims to strengthen its position as a leading lower-carbon steel supplier across North American and global markets.
