Algoma Steel suspends EAF production after unplanned outage at Lake Superior Power plant
ASTL•Unplanned outage suspends EAF production
Algoma Steel reported an unplanned outage at its Lake Superior Power plant when a turbine unit detected an abnormal condition.
Electric arc furnace production was suspended due to lost power supply, while downstream finishing and shipping continued.
The EAF outage is expected to last no more than 21 days; an alternate onsite power plan could restart operations in about 10 days.
Shipment volumes may be affected, but current inventory and order positions indicate limited near-term delivery disruption.
Work is underway with GE Vernova to commission a contracted spare turbine to restore normal power plant operations.
