Alibaba in $1.5B talks for Pupu and rolls out AI robot models
BABA•Alibaba is in talks to acquire on-demand fresh-grocery delivery platform Pupu for about $1.5 billion, surpassing Meituan’s $717 million Dingdong Maicai deal. 1. Acquisition Talks for Pupu
Alibaba is in advanced discussions to acquire on-demand fresh-grocery delivery platform Pupu for approximately $1.5 billion, a figure that would exceed Meituan’s $717 million purchase of Dingdong Maicai in February. Established in 2016 and concentrated in Fuzhou and Shenzhen, Pupu promises 30-minute delivery through fulfilment centres three times the industry average size and uses direct-sales logistics infrastructure and merchandising algorithms that could enhance Alibaba’s last-mile capabilities and regional reach.
2. Shift to AI-Powered Robotics
The company introduced its first complete suite of AI models designed for robots and autonomous agents, signaling a strategic move away from chatbot-centric applications toward intelligent systems capable of executing complex tasks. This pivot targets commercial opportunities in sectors requiring high operational efficiency, such as warehousing and last-mile delivery, aligning with Alibaba’s broader push into robotics, cloud computing and automated task execution.
