Alliant targets 1 GW of new data-center contracts in six months as power demand surges
LNT•Alliant Energy expects to sign contracts for about 1 GW of additional data-center demand within six months, adding to 3.4 GW already contracted. It raised its 2027–2030 capital expenditure forecast by 19% to $15.9 billion and expects peak system demand to rise more than 60% by 2031.
1. New data-center demand
Alliant Energy expects to sign contracts for about 1 gigawatt of additional data-center demand within six months, Chief Financial Officer Robert Durian said. The new load would add to 3.4 GW already contracted with Google, Meta Platforms and QTS Data Centers.
2. Load and investment timeline
The additional 1 GW is expected to begin ramping up between 2029 and 2031, with related investments spread across Alliant’s current planning horizon and beyond. Durian said earnings growth could exceed the company’s 8% target if capital spending increases further to support future load growth and other investment opportunities. Meta is expected to begin taking transmission service in Wisconsin in the first quarter of 2027.
3. Spending and guidance
Alliant raised its four-year capital expenditure forecast by 19% to $15.9 billion for 2027 through 2030, and expects peak demand across its system to increase by more than 60% by 2031. The utility narrowed its 2026 earnings outlook to the upper half of its prior range and issued 2027 guidance of $3.63 to $3.73 per share, with the midpoint in line with Wall Street expectations.
