Alphabet Abandons $1B Indianapolis Data Center as $130B in AI Projects Stall
Alphabet canceled its $1 billion Indianapolis data center minutes before a council vote, part of more than $130 billion in AI data center projects blocked or delayed across the US in 2026. These setbacks risk delaying the company’s AI infrastructure rollout and could elevate capital costs as regulatory scrutiny intensifies.
1. Indianapolis Data Center Cancellation
Alphabet pulled its $1 billion data center proposal near Indianapolis minutes before a scheduled city-county council vote, citing local opposition. The project was intended to support AI workloads but faced backlash over water usage and grid upgrade costs.
2. Widespread Project Delays
US communities have blocked or delayed over $130 billion of AI data center investments in the first quarter of 2026, including proposals in Arizona, Virginia, Texas, Indiana, and Georgia. Rising legislative actions, such as more than 300 data center bills and state moratorium discussions, have heightened permitting uncertainty.
3. Impact on AI Infrastructure Strategy
These setbacks could constrain Alphabet’s AI training capacity expansion, force longer development timelines, and increase capital expenditures due to permit delays. The company may need to explore alternative locations or adjust its infrastructure rollout to mitigate regulatory risks.
