Alphabet commits $10bn upfront in $40bn Anthropic deal, offers SpaceX exposure
Alphabet will invest up to $40bn in Anthropic, committing $10bn in cash now to secure a $350bn valuation with the rest contingent on performance milestones. Separately, Alphabet’s ownership stake offers retail investors indirect exposure to SpaceX ahead of its IPO via various funds.
1. Alphabet’s $40bn Anthropic Investment
Alphabet will allocate $10bn cash initially to acquire a stake in Anthropic, valuing the AI startup at $350bn. The remaining $30bn is structured by performance milestones tied to revenue, infrastructure deployment, and product adoption, positioning Alphabet to compete alongside Amazon’s planned $25bn infusion.
2. Indirect SpaceX Exposure via Alphabet
Alphabet holds strategic equity in SpaceX, enabling investors to gain pre-IPO exposure through Alphabet’s stock. Alternatively, accredited investors can access specialized funds and ETFs—such as SoFi’s Cosmos Fund, Ark Venture Fund, and ERShares Private-Public Crossover ETF—that leverage Alphabet’s SpaceX stake.
