Alphabet Data Centers Drive 35% Nevada Grid Demand, Value Index Removal Looms
Alphabet's Nevada data centers could account for 35% of the state's electricity by 2030, forcing NV Energy to redirect power from Lake Tahoe's 49,000 residents until Liberty Utilities gains transmission access. Russell's June reconstitution will remove Alphabet from its Value Index, risking shifts in passive fund holdings.
1. Nevada Grid Pressure from Data Centers
Alphabet is one of at least 70 AI data center operators in Nevada, where facilities now draw nearly three-quarters of Lake Tahoe’s electricity supply from NV Energy. With demand projected to reach 35% of statewide consumption by 2030, NV Energy will reroute power from 49,000 Tahoe residents until Liberty Utilities installs its own transmission infrastructure.
2. Russell Reconstitution Removes Alphabet from Value Index
In its annual June rebalance, Russell will drop Alphabet from its Value Index classification, reflecting valuation metrics and sector weighting. This change could trigger passive fund reallocations, reducing GOOG exposure in value-focused portfolios and shifting investor capital toward remaining index constituents.
