Alphabet Q3 Digital Ads Reach $74B (+13% YoY) with 650M Gemini Users
Alphabet reported Q3 digital ad revenue of $74 billion, a 13% year-over-year increase representing 73% of total revenue. The company plans to introduce ads to its 650 million monthly active Gemini app users in 2026, capitalizing on an expected 15% annual growth in the digital advertising market.
1. Google Unveils Universal Commerce Protocol
At the National Retail Federation’s annual expo on Jan. 11, Google introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open-source standard designed to unify agent-driven shopping across discovery, purchase and post-purchase stages. UCP creates a common language so that AI agents and retailer systems no longer require custom integrations, significantly reducing development time and cost. The protocol is immediately available for integration and will be extended over the coming months to power additional commerce actions beyond checkout.
2. Integration of Direct Checkout in AI Mode and Gemini
Under the UCP framework, Google will launch a new direct-buy feature on its AI Mode in Search interface and within the Gemini app for eligible U.S. merchants. Shoppers will see a “Buy Now” option embedded in conversational results, enabling one-click purchases at the moment of highest intent. Google Wallet will serve as the initial payment method, with plans to add major digital wallets later this year. By securing transactions at point of intent, retailers can capture incremental sales without redirecting customers off Google’s AI surfaces.
3. Strategic Partnerships and Feedonomics Data Enrichment
Google co-developed UCP with leading platforms including Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair and Target, ensuring broad industry alignment. Commerce will leverage its Feedonomics data enrichment engine to structure merchants’ product catalogs according to Google’s schema, dynamically enhancing titles, attributes and taxonomy. Early testing shows a 25% lift in match rates and a 15% increase in conversion when enriched feeds power AI-driven shopping experiences on Google surfaces.
4. New AI Shopping Tools and Long-Term Market Opportunities
In addition to direct checkout, Google is rolling out Business Agent—a branded chatbot interface allowing consumers to interact with retailers using natural language on Search and Gemini. The company is also piloting Direct Offers, permitting merchants to present real-time discounts within AI conversations. According to a McKinsey report, agentic commerce could unlock a $3 trillion to $5 trillion global retail opportunity by 2030. Google’s UCP and its expanding suite of AI shopping tools position the company to capture a leading role in this fast-growing market segment.
