Vatican Bank unveiled the Morningstar IOR U.S. Catholic Principles Index tracking 50 medium- and large-cap firms that comply with Catholic social doctrine. Alphabet holds a 3.01% weight alongside Meta at 5.31% and Amazon at 5.22%, with the bank eyeing potential ETF licensing to expand investor access.

1. Launch of Catholic Principles Index

Vatican Bank introduced two new equity benchmarks—the Morningstar IOR U.S. Catholic Principles Index and its Eurozone counterpart—each monitoring 50 medium- and large-cap corporations that adhere to Catholic social doctrine. Constituents must meet strict ethical criteria covering human dignity, social justice and environmental protection before inclusion.

2. Alphabet’s Position and Top Holdings

At launch, Meta Platforms leads with a 5.31% weighting, followed by Amazon at 5.22% and NVIDIA at 5.09%. Alphabet secures a 3.01% allocation, placing it among the top ten holdings alongside Tesla, Apple and JPMorgan Chase.

3. ETF Licensing Prospects

By licensing these indexes to third-party providers, Vatican Bank could facilitate exchange-traded funds aligned with church ethics. The ETF sector is projected to approach $30 trillion by 2029, presenting a potential growth opportunity for faith-based investment products.
