Alstom Wins CAD 2.3 Billion Toronto Metro Contract for 70 Trains
Alstom secured a CAD 2.3 billion contract to supply 70 six-car Metropolis metro trains to Toronto’s TTC, with options for 150 additional units. Designed, manufactured and assembled in Canada at its Thunder Bay facility, the order will replace Line 2 fleet and generate about 945 direct and 1,700 indirect Canadian jobs.
1. Major CAD 2.3 Billion Contract Secured
Alstom has signed a CAD 2.3 billion (EUR 1.4 billion) agreement with the Toronto Transit Commission to deliver 70 six-car Metropolis metro trains, with options for up to 150 additional trainsets. Fifty-five of these trains will replace the existing fleet on Line 2, while the remaining 15 will operate on planned extensions of Line 1 to Yonge North and Line 2 to Scarborough. The order was recorded in Alstom’s third quarter of fiscal 2025/2026 and contributes to a suite of recent awards totalling approximately EUR 2.5 billion.
2. Canadian Design, Assembly and Job Creation
All trains will be designed and engineered in Canada, with final assembly at Alstom’s Thunder Bay facility and testing in Kingston, Ontario. The project is expected to generate up to 945 direct, high-skilled jobs—over 600 within Alstom—and more than 1,700 indirect positions across the national supply chain. Local procurement will include Canadian steel and aluminium, reinforcing domestic industrial capacity and supply-chain resilience against future disruptions.
3. Advanced Features and Sustainability Impact
The new Metropolis fleet offers open gangways, multi-purpose spaces for wheelchairs, strollers and bicycles, energy-efficient LED lighting, active levelling systems and wireless smartphone charging. Cybersecurity protections and smart climate controls are integrated throughout. Eco-design elements such as advanced propulsion systems and virtual-reality-assisted design tools aim to reduce lifecycle environmental impacts. These features align with Toronto’s network expansion goals and Alstom’s commitment to low-carbon, passenger-centric urban mobility.
