1. Alstom Secures 2.3 Billion CAD Deal for Toronto Subway Fleet
On 15 January 2026, Alstom S.A. finalized a contract worth 2.3 billion Canadian dollars with the Toronto Transit Commission to supply 70 New Subway Train (NST) sets for Toronto’s subway network, with options for up to 150 additional trainsets. Fifty-five six-car Metropolis metro trains will replace the ageing Line 2 fleet, while the remaining 15 units will serve planned extensions of Line 1 to Yonge North and Line 2 to Scarborough. Designed and engineered in Canada, final assembly will take place at Alstom’s Thunder Bay facility, with testing in Kingston, supporting approximately 945 direct high-paying jobs nationwide—over 600 at Alstom—and some 1,700 indirect positions among local suppliers. The NSTs feature open gangways, multi-purpose areas for wheelchairs and bicycles, energy-efficient lighting, active levelling systems, wireless charging and advanced cybersecurity. Eco-design elements, such as virtual reality-based lifecycle modelling, smart climate controls and advanced propulsion, aim to reduce lifecycle emissions. The order was booked in Alstom’s Q3 of fiscal 2025/26 and underscores the company’s commitment to expanding its Canadian manufacturing footprint and reinforcing onshore rail capabilities.
