Altria Q4 EPS Misses by $0.02, Shares Slide After Release

MOMO

Altria reported Q4 EPS of $1.30, missing the $1.32 Zacks consensus estimate and up modestly from $1.29 a year earlier. The earnings disappointment triggered a decline in Altria’s share price following the release.

1. Q4 Earnings Slightly Below Street Expectations

Altria reported fourth-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.30 per share, falling short of the consensus estimate of $1.32. While this represents a modest increase from the $1.29 earned in the year-ago period, the 1.5% earnings beat threshold was not met. Operating income for the segment declined 2% year-over-year, reflecting a 1.8% drop in shipment volumes as consumers reacted to higher retail prices.

2. Revenue Driven by Price Increases Despite Volume Pressure

Net revenue in the quarter rose 4.2% to $6.0 billion, compared with $5.76 billion a year earlier. This growth was driven entirely by an average 5.1% price increase on Marlboro cigarettes and oral tobacco products. Unit volume declines of 1.8% offset some of the benefit, but Altria’s management highlighted that sequential momentum in retail pricing continued into January 2026.

3. 2026 Profit Forecast Tops Analyst Views

Altria guided 2026 adjusted earnings per share to a range of $5.15 to $5.25, exceeding the current consensus of $5.10. The company plans additional price increases of 5% to 6% on its core tobacco portfolio, expecting these actions to offset a low-single-digit volume decline. Management also reiterated plans to return at least 80% of free cash flow to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases.

4. Key Balance Sheet and Cash Return Metrics

At year-end, Altria held $3.8 billion in net debt and boasted an investment-grade credit rating of BBB+. Free cash flow for the quarter reached $1.2 billion, up 3% from last year, driven by disciplined working capital management. The board approved a 4.4% increase in the quarterly dividend to $0.98 per share, marking the 52nd consecutive year of dividend growth.
