Amazon Launches 1-Hour Delivery on 90,000 Items, Challenging Walmart
Amazon unveiled 1-hour delivery on more than 90,000 items across major U.S. metros and 3-hour service in over 2,000 cities, charging Prime members up to $9.99 per delivery and non-members up to $19.99. This intensifies competition against Walmart's e-commerce fulfillment network.
1. Amazon Expands Ultra-Fast Delivery
Amazon rolled out 1-hour shipping in major metropolitan areas including Los Angeles and Chicago, plus smaller cities like Boise, and introduced 3-hour delivery in over 2,000 U.S. locations. The service covers more than 90,000 products spanning groceries, toys and everyday essentials.
2. Fulfillment Upgrades and Fees
To meet rapid delivery windows, the company established designated workstations and new yellow labels within existing same-day centers, along with updated signage for delivery partners. Prime members pay $9.99 for 1-hour and $4.99 for 3-hour delivery, while non-members pay $19.99 and $14.99 respectively.
3. Competitive Pressure on Walmart
By enhancing its ultra-fast network and imposing premium fees, Amazon is directly challenging Walmart’s same-day and next-day capabilities. This move may force Walmart to accelerate its own delivery upgrades, adjust pricing strategies or expand its fulfillment footprint to defend market share.
