Amazon partners on X-Energy’s 20 GW SMR plan as Chewy warns stretched consumers
Amazon has partnered with X-energy on advanced Xe-100 small modular reactors and TRISO-X fuel as part of a plan to deploy 20 GW of clean baseload power by 2040. Chewy’s CEO warned that consumers are “stretched,” pushing its stock lower and potentially boosting Amazon’s pet supplies division.
1. Amazon-X-Energy Partnership
Amazon has joined X-energy in licensing advanced Xe-100 reactor technology and TRISO-X fuel fabrication, leveraging a capital-light model that focuses on licensing, fuel supply and long-term service revenues rather than direct construction.
2. SMR Deployment Impact
X-energy targets around 20 GW of reactor deployments by 2040, positioning Amazon to secure long-term clean baseload power for its data centers and large industrial operations as demand for reliable, low-carbon energy grows.
3. Chewy Consumer Warning
Chewy’s CEO stated that consumer budgets are stretched, triggering a notable drop in its share price and highlighting the potential for Amazon’s pet supplies division to capture market share from a weakened competitor.
