Amazon Proposes 229,000-Square-Foot Orland Park Store and Adds Wegovy Pill Service

AMZNAMZN

Amazon has proposed a 229,000-square-foot big-box store in Orland Park, Illinois, exceeding Walmart Supercenter size, with the village board set to vote Jan. 19. Amazon Pharmacy now offers Novo Nordisk’s FDA-approved oral GLP-1 Wegovy pill with transparent pricing and free home delivery nationwide.

1. Amazon Proposes First Big-Box Retail Store in Orland Park

Amazon has submitted plans to construct a one-story, 229,000-square-foot retail facility on the former Petey’s II restaurant site in Orland Park, Illinois—50,000 square feet larger than the average Walmart Supercenter. The proposed store will stock groceries, household essentials and general merchandise, alongside a limited on-site warehouse area and dedicated pickup bays for delivery drivers. The Orland Park Plan Commission granted its approval on January 7, and the full village board is scheduled to vote on the development on January 19. If greenlit, the store will join a retail corridor anchored by Target, Costco and Trader Joe’s at the intersection of two major highways, representing Amazon’s most ambitious brick-and-mortar experiment to date.

2. Amazon Pharmacy Expands Access to New Wegovy® Pill with Insurance and Cash-Pay Options

Amazon Pharmacy has launched Novo Nordisk’s newly FDA-approved oral GLP-1 weight-management medication, offering both insurance-covered and transparent cash-pay pricing tiers. Customers nationwide can now order the pill through Amazon’s prescription portal and receive free, two-day home delivery. The service integrates real-time insurance eligibility checks from over 68 health plans and displays out-of-pocket costs before checkout. Amazon Pharmacy reports that 85% of its U.S. prescription customers have insurance coverage for GLP-1 therapies, and it aims to process initial fills within 48 hours of order placement, positioning itself as a significant new channel for specialty drugs.
