Amazon, Walmart's Flipkart launch review of unlicensed security camera listings on India platforms
AMZN•Amazon and Flipkart are reviewing security camera listings in India after an analysis found more than 700 of roughly 770 listings were for models absent from the government’s approved-products database. At least 12 listings have been removed, and Amazon plans to remove Dahua’s Imou brand page.
1. Platforms review listings
Amazon and Flipkart began checking internet-enabled security cameras offered by third-party sellers and brands after the unapproved listings were identified. People familiar with the checks said products without government approval would be removed.
2. Approval rules and removals
Since April, camera manufacturers have been required to submit hardware and software for testing and obtain certification from India’s Bureau of Indian Standards before selling their equipment. At least a dozen listings have been removed, including two models from Hikvision’s EZVIZ brand. One source said Amazon had decided to remove Dahua’s Imou brand page.
3. Security concerns
Former Indian cybersecurity chief Gulshan Rai called unapproved online sales a “serious concern” and said a compromised camera could pose a surveillance risk and serve as a cybersecurity entry point. Maizic co-founder Santosh Kumar Singh said the company had removed live-feed functionality from its cameras and that models requiring approval had been removed from e-commerce websites while clearances were pending.
