American Airlines to offer free in-flight Wi-Fi for loyalty members
American Airlines will launch free in-flight Wi-Fi for AAdvantage loyalty members through AT&T, offering complimentary connectivity on all flights. This partnership-driven service upgrade aims to boost member retention and differentiate American's product as competitors maintain paid Wi-Fi tiers.
1. American Airlines Sponsors OBAP 50th Anniversary
American Airlines has been named the Title Sponsor of the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP) 50th Annual Conference, celebrating five decades of diversity and inclusion in aviation. The partnership launches on January 13, 2026, at the Hilton Chicago O’Hare Airport—site of OBAP’s inaugural meeting—and culminates with the August 12–14 conference in Chicago. As part of its centennial celebrations, the carrier will underwrite a documentary premiere, Hall of Fame induction, awards gala, youth engagement programs, career development workshops and networking events. OBAP reaches more than 20,000 students annually and American Airlines, with its 130,000 employees operating over 6,000 daily flights to more than 350 destinations in 60 countries, will leverage its global network to expand mentorship and scholarship funding for underrepresented talent in aerospace.
2. Frequent Flyer Status Requirements Held Steady
American Airlines has confirmed that it will maintain its elite status earning thresholds for 2027, marking the third consecutive year without changes to qualification levels. The Gold tier remains at 40,000 Loyalty Points, with new mid-tier perks introduced at the 15,000-point mark, including two onboard food and beverage coupons or a subscription to The New York Times gaming platform or The Athletic. This decision aligns with rival United Airlines and Delta Air Lines, which also held their 2026 thresholds steady, as carriers shift loyalty models toward rewarding spending over distance flown. The stability aims to retain high-spending customers and close the margin with industry profit leaders.
3. Free In-Flight Wi-Fi Launch for Loyalty Members
Beginning in April 2026, American Airlines will offer complimentary in-flight Wi-Fi to all AAdvantage loyalty program members on North American flights, under a new partnership with AT&T. The rollout follows an initial test phase on select domestic routes announced last April. The carrier has invested in upgrading onboard connectivity hardware across its narrow-body and wide-body fleet and expects the free Wi-Fi benefit to drive additional co-branding credit card spend and incremental ancillary revenue, while enhancing the travel experience for its more than 200 million annual customers.
