American Express to Pay $700M for TheFork, Boost Dining Network to 75,000 Restaurants
AXP•American Express will buy TheFork for $700 million to bolster its dining ecosystem and European market presence. The deal increases its restaurant booking network to roughly 75,000 venues globally and is set to close by end 2026 pending approvals.
1. Deal Structure and Timing
American Express will acquire TheFork from Tripadvisor for $700 million in cash, subject to customary purchase price adjustments and labor consultations. The transaction is expected to complete by the end of 2026 after regulatory approvals, with TheFork retaining its current leadership team.
2. European Market Expansion
TheFork’s reservation and management platform spans 11 European countries, connecting consumers with over 50,000 restaurant partners. When combined with American Express’ existing Resy and Tock platforms, the company’s global dining network will grow to about 75,000 bookable restaurants.
3. Strategic Benefits
The acquisition deepens American Express’ dining ecosystem by offering card members expanded discovery and reservation options and provides restaurant partners broader access to the company’s customer base. This move aligns with American Express’ strategy to enhance its membership model through differentiated dining and lifestyle services.
