Xbox NAND Costs Could Quintuple by 2027, Forcing Layoffs and Cuts
MSFT•Microsoft's Xbox unit warns component costs have doubled since last fall and may quintuple by the 2027 holiday season, with NAND rising from $0.05–$0.06 per GB to $0.30 per GB. The company plans layoffs and marketing cuts after its fiscal year-end to protect console margins due to escalating storage expenses.
1. Rising Memory and Storage Costs
In an internal memo, Xbox leadership warned that storage costs doubled by last fall and have doubled again since, with prices rising from $0.05–$0.06 to $0.30 per GB, and could reach five times 2024 levels by the 2027 holiday season. Memory costs are following a similar steep trajectory.
2. Margin Pressure on Consoles
Analysts estimate the NAND shortage is adding roughly $250 to a 1TB Series X and $500 to a 2TB Special Edition console, significantly squeezing Xbox margins. A surge in AI data center demand is reshaping consumer hardware economics and intensifying component scarcities.
3. Strategic Reset: Layoffs and Budget Cuts
Xbox is planning workforce reductions and marketing budget cuts after Microsoft’s June 30 fiscal year-end to protect profitability. The critical question is whether these cost-saving measures will preserve margins without dampening consumer demand.
