Americans vote with control of Congress at stake
SPY•Americans voted in midterm elections that will determine control of Congress, with polls and analysts favoring Democrats to win the House while the Senate remained uncertain. Democrats needed to gain at least three House seats and four Senate seats for majorities.
1. Congressional control at stake
Voters went to the polls in elections seen as a verdict on President Donald Trump's second term. Polls and nonpartisan analysts favored Democrats to take the House, while control of the Senate depended on nearly 10 closely contested statewide races, most in Republican strongholds.
2. Campaign issues and turnout
All 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats were being contested. Democrats needed to defend their current seats and win at least two states Trump carried by double-digit margins in 2024 to secure a Senate majority. Voters cited affordability concerns, including high costs for health care, fuel and food.
3. Voting and election disputes
Voting equipment problems were reported in counties across Georgia, Iowa, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Wisconsin, potentially causing local delays. The Justice Department said it was deploying 1,000 election monitors and observers to all 50 states. Democrats criticized the plan as potential voter intimidation.
