Anthropic's IPO filing shows explosive growth, risks and staggering costs
QQQ•Anthropic disclosed $16.3 billion in first-half revenue and an $80.7 billion net loss in its IPO filing. Revenue for the three months ended June 30 rose 1,368% year over year to $11.6 billion, while the company warned that growth could fluctuate and detailed risks tied to its AI systems.
1. Revenue and losses
Anthropic disclosed steep losses and rapid revenue growth in a filing as it moved closer to a potential IPO. Its net loss for the first half of 2026 widened to $80.7 billion, largely because of an increase in the fair value of bonds convertible into shares; revenue was about $16.3 billion. For the three months ended June 30, revenue reached $11.6 billion, up 1,368% from a year earlier, while the net loss widened to $66.3 billion from $14.4 billion a year earlier.
2. IPO and valuation
Anthropic is expected to go public before Thanksgiving, though the filing did not disclose offering terms. Some current and prospective investors valued the company at about $1.5 trillion, down from roughly $2 trillion a week earlier. Anthropic said its revenue growth rate could decline and fluctuate.
3. AI risks and costs
The prospectus warned that advanced AI systems could be misused or exhibit behaviors resembling blackmail, and said the company’s growing use of AI in research could outpace its ability to develop safety measures. Anthropic said it relies on a limited number of cloud providers, including Amazon, Google and Microsoft, and suppliers such as Broadcom. It expects compute and infrastructure expenses to rise in absolute dollars and remain its largest operating expense.
