Arm Launches AGI CPU with Meta Partnership; Amazon Acquires 42-inch Sprout Maker
Arm unveiled its first production-ready Arm AGI CPU with Meta as launch partner, marking its move into in-house silicon that could reduce royalty income from Apple’s chip designs. Amazon acquired Fauna Robotics, adding 50 staff to develop the 42-inch Sprout humanoid, boosting competition for Apple’s consumer robotics ambitions.
1. Arm Unveils First In-House Arm AGI CPU
Arm launched its first production-ready Arm AGI CPU, built on Neoverse architecture with Meta as launch partner, designed for inference in AI data centers. The chip is already available to order and counts OpenAI, Cerebras and Cloudflare among its launch partners.
2. Amazon Acquires Fauna Robotics
Amazon completed its acquisition of Fauna Robotics, integrating about 50 employees and retaining the Sprout robot brand. The 42-inch humanoid with walking, gripping and interactive capabilities will join Amazon’s Personal Robotics Group as the company explores consumer robotics applications.
3. Risks to Apple’s Chip Licensing Model
Arm’s shift to in-house silicon could reduce royalty income from licensees such as Apple, which uses Arm’s CPU designs in its A-series and M-series chips. This move disrupts nearly 36 years of Arm’s licensing-only business and may pressure margins on future Apple silicon.
4. Competition in Consumer Robotics
Amazon’s Fauna deal intensifies the race to bring home robots to market, positioning Sprout against other in-development humanoids. Apple’s own rumored robotics projects may face stiffer competition as Amazon leverages Fauna’s technology and robotics expertise.
