Baker Hughes Reports Seven Straight Weeks of U.S. Rig Additions, Total Rig Count Rises to 563
BKR•Baker Hughes’ U.S. rig count rose by four year-over-year to 563 this week, the seventh consecutive weekly gain and first since May 2022. Oil rigs climbed to 431 (down 11 year-over-year), gas rigs slipped to 124 (up 10 year-over-year) and frac spreads increased to 192.
1. Weekly Rig Count Growth
The total U.S. rig count climbed to 563 this week, up four year-over-year and marking the seventh straight weekly increase, the longest streak since May 2022. Oil rigs rose by two to 431 (down 11 year-over-year), while gas rigs edged down by one to 124 (up 10 year-over-year).
2. Regional Drilling Activity
Activity in major shale regions diverged, with the Permian Basin adding two rigs to 257 (18 fewer than a year ago) and the Eagle Ford holding steady at 44 rigs (up 4 year-over-year). The Cana Woodford saw a two-rig decline, contributing to the overall shifts in the national count.
3. Frac Spread and Production Trends
Frac spread crews increased by three to 192, suggesting elevated well-completion activity. U.S. crude oil output averaged 13.707 million barrels per day for the week, slightly below last week’s 13.715 million bpd but up 299,000 bpd from a year earlier.
