BHP Signs Four-Year CN and CPKC Rail Contracts for Stage 1 Jansen Potash
BHP•BHP has signed four-year rail transportation contracts with Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Kansas City to move Stage 1 production from its Jansen Potash Mine in Saskatchewan to Vancouver’s Westshore Terminals for export. Dual-access via the Jansen Access Spur enhances supply chain reliability and flexibility ahead of mid-2027 production startup.
1. Rail Transportation Agreements
BHP has secured four-year contracts with Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Kansas City to operate unit trains between the Jansen Potash Mine in Saskatchewan and Westshore Terminals in Vancouver, establishing a reliable transport link for Stage 1 output.
2. Dual-Access Logistics Model
The Jansen Access Spur connects directly to both CN and CPKC mainlines, enabling dual-access routing to optimize scheduling, reduce bottlenecks and provide alternative pathways in case of line disruptions.
3. Contract Term and Production Timeline
The initial agreements cover approximately four years, aligning with Stage 1 production plans at Jansen and supporting first output targeted for mid-2027, with future extensions to correspond to subsequent project phases.
4. Export Infrastructure and Market Reach
By tying the mine to Vancouver’s port facilities, BHP ensures efficient loading at Westshore Terminals and reinforces Canada’s role in global potash supply chains, facilitating exports to key agricultural markets worldwide.
