BitGo flags Bitcoin transaction signatures as primary quantum computing risk
BTGO•BitGo said quantum computing poses a greater future threat to Bitcoin transaction signatures than to mining. More than 34% of bitcoin had public keys exposed onchain as of March 1, 2026, while no publicly known quantum computer can recover private keys from public keys today.

BitGo’s analysis said holders can reduce exposure through wallet management, but protection against fast quantum attacks would require protocol changes. Proposed Bitcoin upgrades remain drafts, leaving migration paths and the treatment of vulnerable dormant coins unresolved.
