Brazil seeks 'full tariff reduction' in US trade pact
EWZ•Brazil is seeking a “full tariff reduction” in trade talks with the US, including cuts to tariffs on steel and aluminum and other duties. The two countries will establish a working group, and the US plans to submit a proposal in the coming weeks.
1. Tariff negotiations
Brazil is seeking a “full tariff reduction” in talks with the US, Trade Minister Marcio Elias Rosa said after meeting US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on the sidelines of a G20 meeting in Milwaukee. The two countries will establish a working group to discuss a potential trade agreement and aim to move swiftly toward a mutually acceptable understanding.
2. Tariffs and next steps
Brazil’s requested cuts include all US Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum, a 12.5% duty related to US forced labor allegations, and a 25% tariff imposed under a Section 301 investigation. The US will submit a proposal in the coming weeks covering the scope of negotiations, including tariff and non-tariff issues. Rosa said accessing Brazil’s critical minerals could also become part of the talks, with Brazil offering similar opportunities to other countries if they make value-added investments in processing.
