Cadeler Completes Installation of 100 Turbines on 1.4GW Sofia Offshore Wind Farm
CDLR•Cadeler finalized installation of 100 SG 14-222 turbines at RWE’s 1.4GW Sofia offshore wind farm using the Wind Peak vessel delivered in August 2024. Testing and commissioning of the high-voltage direct current distribution system is ongoing, and the project is slated to power 1.2 million UK homes annually.
1. Completion of Turbine Installation
Cadeler concluded the installation of 100 Siemens Gamesa SG 14-222 turbines at RWE’s 1.4GW Sofia offshore wind farm. The SG 14-222 models feature a 252m hub height, 108m blades and a 222m rotor diameter, with installation operations executed from March 2025 after mobilisation from the Port of Hull.
2. Wind Peak Vessel Inaugural Campaign
The Wind Peak vessel, delivered in August 2024, conducted its inaugural installation campaign on Sofia, transporting and installing all turbine components with a high-capacity crane and optimized deck design. This P-class vessel is purpose-built for new-generation offshore wind turbines and marks Cadeler’s entry into advanced offshore installation capabilities.
3. Energy Supply Impact and Commissioning Status
Half of the installed turbines are fitted with RecyclableBlades manufactured by Siemens Gamesa at the Green Port Hull facility, and Prysmian Group has completed the high-voltage cable installation. Testing and commissioning of the high-voltage direct current distribution system is ongoing, with the farm expected to generate enough electricity for nearly 1.2 million UK households annually.
