Canada loses net 68,300 jobs in September, jobless rate rises to 6.5%
SPY•Canada lost a net 68,300 jobs in September, and the unemployment rate rose to 6.5%. Average hourly wages for permanent employees increased 2.3% from September 2025 to C$38.74.
1. Employment declines
Employment fell by 68,300 jobs in September, with full-time positions down 35,400 and part-time positions down 32,900. Goods-producing employment declined by 16,000, largely in manufacturing, while services employment fell by 52,300, led by educational services, health care and social assistance. The unemployment rate rose to 6.5% from 6.4% in August; surveyed analysts had forecast 9,200 new jobs and a 6.5% unemployment rate.
