Carnival Completes S-100 Bridge Simulator Tests Across Four International Ports

CCLCCL

Carnival's CSMART ran bridge simulator tests with hydrographic offices and ports in the UK, Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand to evaluate IHO S-100 digital navigation data in confined waters. Simulations used two S-100 ECDIS systems and pilot units to optimize chart layering, tides, currents and under-keel clearance in port waters.

1. Simulator Test Execution

Carnival's CSMART center conducted bridge simulator trials in confined waters replicating approaches, transits and departures at four ports: Rotterdam, Napier, Melbourne and Southampton. Tests evaluated IHO S-100 digital navigation data across different operational complexity scenarios to capture user interaction and performance.

2. Technical Configuration and Collaboration

Trials used two S-100-capable ECDIS systems from Teledyne and OSI Maritime Systems and portable pilot units from QPS and SEAiq Pilot, all integrated with Wartsila full mission bridge simulators. Participants included national hydrographic offices, port authorities, marine pilots and technology providers to provide comprehensive feedback.

3. Benefits and Next Steps

S-100 integration enabled dynamic layering of electronic charts, real-time tidal and current data and under-keel clearance management, improving situational awareness in tight margins. Feedback will inform IHO standard development, ECDIS design enhancements and future mariner training modules ahead of broader real-world adoption.
