Centrus Energy Secures $900M DOE Task Order for Piketon Enrichment Expansion
Centrus Energy is pursuing a multi-billion-dollar expansion at Piketon, Ohio, adding centrifuge manufacturing and a 150k sq ft operations building to boost LEU and HALEU output. Supported by a $900 million DOE task order, Centrus targets HALEU cascade online by 2029 and 12 metric tons HALEU production after 2030.
1. Structural Tightness in Enrichment Market
The global uranium enrichment market has entered a period of structural tightness with separative work unit spot prices reaching record highs by Q4 2025 as Western utilities seek alternatives to Russian enrichment services.
2. Piketon Facility Expansion
Centrus is executing a multi-billion-dollar expansion at its Piketon, Ohio site, including domestic centrifuge manufacturing capacity and a 150,000-square-foot training, operations and maintenance facility to increase LEU and HALEU output.
3. DOE Funding for Expansion
In January 2026, the U.S. Department of Energy awarded Centrus a $900 million milestone-based task order to fund HALEU enrichment expansion, providing procurement funding that limits equity dilution and enhances financial flexibility.
4. HALEU Production Roadmap
Centrus, the only licensed Western HALEU producer, plans to bring its first new enrichment cascade online in 2029 and target annual HALEU production of roughly 12 metric tons after 2030 to serve advanced reactor technologies.
