Chemed Plans 60 Monthly Hires After VITAS Cuts 100 FTEs, Roto-Rooter Sees 16% Organic Lead Drop
Chemed’s VITAS segment boosted margins by running about 100 FTEs below budget and will hire 60 FTEs monthly to support growth. Roto-Rooter saw its first residential plumbing revenue increase since Q4 2022, is shifting to paid marketing after a 16% drop in organic leads and foresees $5M–$5.5M from two franchise acquisitions.
1. VITAS Margin Improvement and Hiring
Chemed’s hospice unit VITAS ran roughly 100 full-time employees below its budgeted headcount in Q1, driving stronger margins. Management plans to hire approximately 60 FTEs per month through year-end to support anticipated average daily census growth and restore staffing levels.
2. Roto-Rooter Residential Revenue Rebound
Roto-Rooter recorded its first uptick in residential plumbing and sewer and drain revenue since Q4 2022, driven by sustained homeowner demand. This improvement marks a key turnaround in a segment that had faced prolonged softness in contract operations and water restoration.
3. Shift to Paid Marketing After Organic Drop
Changes to the Google algorithm cut natural leads by 16%, prompting a rise in paid marketing expenses, primarily through Google search. Paid leads now represent 53%–54% of total leads, and the company expects this mix and associated costs to persist through 2026.
4. Franchise Acquisitions Add $5M–$5.5M Revenue
Chemed acquired plumbing franchises in San Francisco and Fort Worth that are projected to generate between $5 million and $5.5 million in additional revenue in 2026. These deals are offsetting headwinds in other service lines to keep overall growth aligned with initial guidance.
