Since 2021, average outage time has dropped 28%, and the plan funds expanded tree trimming, line burial, stronger poles and smart interruption technology.

Michigan regulators approved Consumers Energy’s 2026 Reliability Action Plan, ending a year-long review process and enabling grid upgrades across Grand Rapids, Flint, Lansing and Northern Michigan communities.
2. Past outage improvements
Since 2021, average annual outage time per customer has declined by one hour—a 28% reduction—reflecting previous investments in distribution enhancements and resilience measures.
3. Funded grid upgrades
The plan channels 75 cents of every customer dollar into expanded tree trimming miles, power line burial, storm-resistant poles, instant-interruption technology and enhanced physical and cyber security.
4. Customer support initiatives
Consumers Energy will continue bill-assistance outreach, including $5 million to nonprofits, senior-specific programs and direct support measures while preparing its 2027 Reliability Action Plan filing in June.
