CoStar’s Apartments.com sees U.S. apartment rents slip 0.08% in September, annual growth rises to 1.5%
CSGP•U.S. apartment rents fell 0.08% in September 2026 to $1,752, ending nine months of flat-to-positive gains, while annual growth rose to 1.5% from 1.3% in August.
1. Monthly rent declines
CoStar’s Apartments.com reported that rents fell across all regions in September. The Mountain region recorded the steepest regional decline, at 0.3%.
2. Metro results diverge
Only 8 of the 50 largest metro areas posted rent increases, while 35 declined. Salt Lake City led monthly declines with a 0.8% drop. On an annual basis, rents rose 12.8% in San Francisco and fell 1.8% in San Antonio.
