Data guzzler threatens software’s last moat

Databricks said on July 16 that it had signed a term sheet for a strategic funding round that values the company at $188 billion.
The round, which Databricks expects to close later this summer, is being led by existing investor Coatue and will include both new and existing investors.
CustomerLake and the broader software threat
The company’s CustomerLake marketing suite, unveiled in June, represents the threat of this shift moving up to functions similar to those offered by Adobe and Salesforce. If customer data, AI models and agents already reside on one platform, clients may choose to shift more of their work there. It is little wonder that German software-maker SAP acquired data-storage provider Dremio in May. The industry needs to refill its moat.
